Primitive Wood Craft Pattern

In this book I tell of my conversations with several men who carve chains and other related objects. The linked chain cut from a single block of wood is the most persistent and universal form of woodcarving. I do not pretend to explain every global instance of chain carving; rather, I look at the experiences of a few carvers in one locale to see what patterns emerge. I especially argue that people often use creativity to help them adjust - sometimes to a new situation, a life crisis, or emotional conflicts and tensions.

Wood router - A router is a woodworking tool used to rout out (hollow out) an area in the face of a piece of wood. It was a tool particularly used by pattern makers and consisted of a broad-based wooden hand plane with a narrow blade projecting well beyond its base plate.

Straw marquetry - Straw marquetry is a craft very similar to that of wood marquetry except that straw replaces the wood veneer. It is thought to have first been practised in the east; examples were brought to England in the 17th century.
