Martin Leman's Cats

Martin Leman's Cats
Wild or domesticated, fierce or playful, cats have fascinated humans since antiquity. This obsession is reflected in the key roles cats have played in countless cultures. Ancient Egyptians elevated their cats to gods whilst others have vilified them as witches' familiars or omens of bad luck. Martin Leman's paintings of cats capture the many characteristics that have inspired such extreme reactions throughout history. His cats are free spirited, comforting, agile, fiercely loyal and absurdly adventurous. For over thirty years Leman has been painting cats in a bold and colorful style which has enticed and delighted cat lovers around the world. This beautifully illustrated book reveals the breathtaking diversity of Leman's paintings. From the classic to the comic, the humorous to the impossible, Leman's art is as varied as the creatures themselves.

The Cat in Ancient Egypt by Jaromir Malek,
The Cat in Ancient Egypt by Jaromir Malek,
Most modern domestic cats are descendants of the cats of ancient Egypt. These beautiful and engaging creatures represent, therefore, a living link between Egyptian civilization and the completely different world of today. Dr Malek's absorbing survey shows that wild cats were probably domesticated at least as early as 2000 BC but started to be regularly included in tomb paintings of family life only some 500 years later, during the New Kingdom. Dr Malek draws evidence from a vast range of artistic and written sources to show how the cat became one of the most widely-esteemed animals, revered as a manifestation of the goddess Bastet. Large numbers of mummified cats were buried in the Late Period, and bronze statuettes of cats were dedicated to temples during religious festivals. Illustrating the text with representations of cats in tomb paintings, sculpture, papyri, jewellery, ostraka, mummies and coffins, the author conveys the affection and respect in which cats were held in ancient Egypt. This lively and readable book will surely prove to be the definitive account of the Egyptian cat: aristocrat of domestic animals.

The Unadulterated Cat - The Unadulterated Cat by Terry Prachett, illustrated by Joliffe Gray, is a book written to promote what Pratchett terms the 'Real Cat', a cat who urinates in the flowerbeds, rips up the furniture, eats frogs, mice and sundry other small animals. The opposite of the Real Cat is the 'Fizzy Keg Cat', a well-behaved and bland kind, as seen on cat food advertisements.
